I started attending Raj’s classes due to a friend’s urging when I was in shoulder and hip pain due to the numerous years of tennis playing and competition. I had trouble sleeping and getting comfortable at night. In the morning, I would have difficulty walking. After about 5 classes, my pain began to subside and after a year, I am in significant less pain. Raj has an ability to get into your problem areas and make you feel better. She will focus on you while taking care of the rest of the class’s trouble spots. She will push you out of your comfort zone, but the results are life changing.

I’ve been taking Raj’s class for almost 30 years. If I had to describe her in one word, I’d say she’s a magician. Aside from making you more flexible, stronger, balanced and focused she’l also heal you. She will look at her students and teach the class according to their abilities and what they need that day. I have been practicing yoga for the last 15 years and 10 years with Raj at Equinox. Yoga has become the “ thing to do” and a lot of people have entered the scene as yoga teachers. Raj is a true Yogi , her classes are never the same and Raj’s classes are not constant Vinyasa’s where in the long run becomes boring. Her classes will usually focus on one part of the body and you complete the class feeling “ GREAT”.
Raj does not preach in her classes she is there to teach you and instruct you on the benefit of each pose on the body.
There is no music in Raj’s classes which at first I wished for but truly it really does not matter what matters is Raj’s passion for teaching YOGA and for everyone to try to reach a union between body and mind.
If you were to attend Raj’s class on Saturday morning in the Roslyn location, you would not find a spot very easily, The class is packed and students come from different clubs to attend this class.
I think I have said it all “ Raj is truly a great teacher” and we all love her workshops.

Raj has been my teacher for about 15 years now. I have studied with many teachers, but Raj is unique. Speaking as someone who takes classes at an intermediate/advanced level, I find that two things make her approach special. One is the incredible creativity she brings to the asana practice. In her class, you’ll find yourself bending and twisting and stretching in ways you never have before, using muscles you haven’t accessed in quite that way. She builds up to these postures with increasingly challenging intermediate poses, and she is always sensitive to how far an individual student is capable of going. When she senses that a student is approaching his or her limit, she’ll suggest alternatives that are challenging but not impossible. And that speaks to the second wonderful aspect of her teaching: her kindness. Raj is firm yet gentle and loving. Finally, Raj’s knowledge of yoga goes far beyond the postures. She embodies the philosophy, and when she shares that through breath practice or during a guided meditation, she lifts up her students emotionally and mentally as well as physically.

I began seeing Raj after finding myself in the hospital and being diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Multiple epidurals and prescribed pain medication were little help, and i was still in extreme pain. The pain was so severe that I could not function at work. It affected time with my family and my daily exercise routine. It eventually reached a point where i could no longer even sit or lay down to find even a moments relief. It was at this point that the pain management doctor prescribed clinical yoga. Being in the fitness industry, I have relationships with some of the most certified and respected fitness professionals on Long Island. When asking for referrals of a knowledgeable, experienced yoga instructor, nearly all of my contacts referred me to Raj. Not having a clear understanding of what yoga actually entails, I was hesitant and skeptical. During the first one-on-one session, Raj explained the anatomy and physiology of my body and came up with a specific course of action. Within the first few sessions she took a very individualized approach to target my injury, and I soon began to feel relief. After 3-4 months of clinical yoga with Raj, I am pain free and continue to meet with her on a weekly basis. I have now transitioned over to a wellness program incorporating yoga and mediation. I no longer need pain medication or hospital visits, and have found that yoga is now an integral part of my exercise regiment. I cannot explain how much I appreciate our relationship, and what we have accomplished together. I highly recommend that anyone who is experiencing any kind of trauma work with Raj.
